Deepa Dabir did her bachelor’s and master’s studies in Mumbai, India. She first came to the US as a graduate student wherein her PhD thesis focused on understanding the role of astrocytes (a type of non-neuronal cell) in the pathogenesis of Tau-related neurodegenerative disorders, this work was performed under the mentorship of Dr. Virginia M.-Y. Lee at University of Pennsylvania (provide link here). She then switched fields and joined the laboratory of Dr. Carla M. Koehler at UCLA for her postdoctoral studies (provide link for Koehler lab here). There, she began her investigations of mitochondrial import pathways, work that is currently the foundation of ongoing studies in the Dabir Lab at LMU.
Dr. Dabir’s idea of fun is to read books, try on new recipes and watch “endless” tennis. And yes, she loves British tele!

CURRENT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
OWEN DAILEY
Owen Dailey is a junior biology major and joined the lab in 2018. Owen’s current research revolves around biochemically characterizing AIM32p, a mitochondrial protein. To do this, Owen uses a variety of laboratory techniques including SDS Page protocol, western blotting, and pinning assays. Owen plans to attend dental school after graduating college.

RAYANA BONNELL
Rayana is a senior biochemistry and theology student at Loyola Marymount University, CA originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her research currently revolves around identification and purification of yeast mitochondrial protein APD1. Outside of the lab she participates as a Teaching Assistant in the Chemistry department, a member of Agape Service Organization and a board member of the Chemistry Society. After graduation she intends on going to medical school and working with nonprofit organizations.
|
DANIEL SIMON
Daniel Simon is a senior biochemistry major who joined the lab in 2019. His hobbies include studying music and film. Daniel's current project involves studying CMC4, a protein found within the mitochondria. Daniel uses a variety of DNA and biochemical techniques to understand CMC4 function. Daniel intends on attending graduate school after graduating from LMU.

KAMILAH ROCA-DATZER
Kamilah is a sophomore Biology student at Loyola Marymount University. She's currently working as a Rain's Research Assistant in the lab. Outside of the lab she participates in LMU's Latino Student Union and works as a Teaching Assistant in the school's General Biology Lab. After graduation she plans on joining the Peace Corps and aiding in health promotion before attending medical school.

NICHOLAS YEO
Nicholas is a junior biology major from San Jose, California. Outside of class, he is involved in Sursum Corda, a service organization on campus, and he tutors science/math at a local middle school. He loves to watch/play sports and try different foods. He plans to attend medical school after graduating from LMU.

ROGER RATNAM
Roger is a Freshman Biology major at Loyola Marymount University who joined the lab in 2020. In lab, he’s currently working on preparing media and equipment to be used for future experiments and trials. His hobbies include but are not limited to basketball, hiking, and working at the Ronald Reagan Hospital. Roger wishes to attend medical school after his undergrad.
