Welcome to the DABIR LAB in the Department of Biology at Loyola Marymount University, LA. We are a diverse group of scientists that study the important process of mitochondrial biogenesis. A basic question in cell biology is the mechanism by which a given protein reaches its correct location within the cell. Considering that the mitochondrion is the “powerhouse” of the cell, this protein transport process becomes even more relevant to this double-membraned organelle. In addition, the mitochondria are vital to many cellular regulatory processes such as apoptosis, heme synthesis, and for free radical detoxification. Using biochemical and cell biologic approaches, we seek to comprehensively understand the mechanism of protein import into mitochondria and determining the process by which defects in mitochondrial protein translocation lead to disease.
